Parks Academy of Learning Summer Camp
On July 6th and 7th, Cappy’s got to be a part of the Parks Academy of Learning Summer Camp at Washington Middle School. Coaches Margaret, Ann and Mike and Assistant Coach Lynna worked with a total of 21 Middle School students from several area schools. Participants jumped rope and did medicine ball drills, then learned and practiced their stance, cover, punches, and footwork. They learned so quickly that we were able to add defense and counter-punches to their repertoire. Well done, PAL Camp!
Self Defense Workshop
Cappy’s Gym had the pleasure of leading two 2-hour self defense workshops for women. Participants focused on self awareness, boundary recognition, finding their Speak Up person and having a ton of fun. Cappy’s Coaches and a select group of Cappy’s Fitness and Recreational Boxers lead participants through drills that woke up and strengthened their bodies and voices. It was powerful to witness the participants gain vocal power and confidence as they progressed through the workshop.
“This was really great and empowering. I liked that you ease into everything. By the end, I felt really confident and sure of myself.”
Riley’s Bachelor Workout
This event brought together client Riley’s best friends, cousins and dad to share with him his transition into marriage. As Coach Cappy led the group through a boxer’s tradition of wrapping the hands before a workout, he linked the ritual to the present. The group reflected on the changes ahead in the next few days, giving a moment to appreciate all they have been through together and how they will continue to support one another no matter what life has to offer. The workout was a blend of fun, honoring the jitters as well as the commitment of the transition into marriage. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to workout together.
Rainier Scholars, a group of 7th through 9th grade girls from different schools in the Seattle area, came to Cappy’s Boxing Gym to get stronger and to increase their confidence. They learned that boxing training doesn’t just strengthen the body, but strengthens the ability to stand tall when facing challenges both inside and outside of the gym.
“It was so empowering to see our students so committed; they were focused and determined to show, or rather prove, their potential.”
Girl Scout Troupe: Earning their Staying Fit Badge
A local Girl Scout Troupe earned their Staying Fit badge at Cappy’s. The Staying Fit Badge’s stated purpose is: “When I’ve earned this badge, I’ll know what I need to get strong and stay that way.”
Their troupe leader said, “Of course my mind immediately went to Cappy’s and the amazing environment that you, the other coaches, and the community of Cappy’s provides. I think the girls would really love the opportunity to be in the gym and learn about a “tough” sport.”
The report after the workout? “The girls could not stop talking about it. They thought it was so awesome!“
The first half of their workout focused on form and technique. By the time everyone put their headgear on and mouth guards in, they were ready to have some serious fun.
Family Workout and Bachelor Party
For this group workout, our coaches combined boxing basics with fun group family drills. This was done ensuring that all skill levels and fitness levels could participate while highlighting our client’s transitioning role in the family.
“Excellent workout and a LOT of fun!”
To celebrate, A.J. brought 16 of his friends to the gym for a fun workout. Those who had some experience helped the others learn, and they all cheered each other on through fun group drills, partner drills and a Heavy Bag Circuit. By the end, all the boxers could execute a 6-punch Combination (and hold Focus Mitts for the combo)! Well done, A.J. and Friends!
It’s always fun to welcome new groups to Cappy’s. On November 8th, we had the pleasure of training a group of Ambassadors and employees from Lululemon. As you can see from the photos, these new boxers were extremely fit and enthusiastic! Hope to see you all in the gym again soon!
“Very fun & exciting class. Simple & sinister- my arms are heavy!”
