7 Steps For Taking the First Step into a Boxing Gym

Boxing is tough. Are you sure you are ready for this? Here are seven steps to help you assess where you are:

  • Decide why you need it.
    When you think over the idea of participating in some new activity but lack the courage to finally give it a go, you should start with defining the actual reasons you need this. You might be a true boxing fan or you want to get engaged in physical activity. What is it? Perhaps, you live in a dangerous neighborhood, so learning how to defend yourself and your close ones would be a plus. Anyway, you’ve got to identify your motivation.
  • Understand your fears.
    Starting something new is always difficult as it means getting out of a comfort zone. Barry had been afraid of new beginnings for his entire life until one day his friend made him go to a nearby gym. Of course, there was some discomfort at first. But when Barry started his first boxing training program, he found the classes fun and exciting indeed.
    Your fears can stalk you everywhere. Some people are afraid because of having no experience, some avoid changing the routine they are used to, and others feel embarrassed about a lack of muscle mass when comparing themselves to the boxers they see in a gym. The truth is it’s never as scary as it seems – keep it in mind when making a decision.
  • Think of the benefits.
    Any sports activity has certain benefits. Unlike at-home boxing workouts, training at gyms is much more beneficial because you have an opportunity to get new friends, meet professional boxers, get involved in training programs under the supervision of an expert, etc. Whatever the reason you consider this decision is, it is a chance to boost your stamina, become stronger and more confident, and improve physical fitness. You can even invite your friends to enter a gym with you, thus getting an opportunity to get more time with them.
  • Think of what you will lose if you don’t do it.
    When trying to make up your mind, imagining the losses is a good method to speed up the decision-making. When Lisa first got an idea of entering a gym, she was too busy with work to give much thought to it. One evening, re-watching her favorite boxing matches. she remembered her unrealized intention. She asked himself, “What if I never feel the same excitement these boxers feel when fighting in a real ring?” This question made Lisa  get more serious about finding and joining a gym;
  • Imagine the worst scenario.
    If you still lack confidence in your decision, try to picture in your head the worst scenario that can happen. Here’s an example. Michael always knew he is scrawny. He wanted to gain some muscles but never had enough courage to make a decision to sign up for the first boxing class. Following the advice of one of his friends, he tried to imagine the worst thing that could happen to him and realized that the only thing that stopped him was the fear of being mocked because of his shape. It took him some time to understand that such a scenario might happen, but that he would never get in shape if he didn’t try.
  • Don’t forget that you can change your decision.
    This little tip is actually a trick to fool your mind. Most people treat their decisions as irreversible, while in fact, they can always step back in case something goes wrong. When you dare to visit a  boxing gym for the first time, you may feel uncomfortable. Yet, this might not be enough reason to give up the idea itself. Or it might.  You get to decided.  Keeping this in mind, you will be more confident about your choices.
  • Make an informed decision.
    “Informed” here means you are aware of all the possible consequences of your decision since you have studied the issue thoroughly.
